Earlier this month BWB partnered with Nottingham Trent University in organising a very special lecture in memory of former Executive Director Colin Langford.
Colin was an alumnus of Nottingham Trent University and embodied BWB’s passion for developing the next generation of talent by providing invaluable support and mentoring to those fortunate enough to work alongside him. Without exception, all will say what a major influence Colin had on their career development and insight into the engineering profession, all whilst having great fun along the way!
The lecture provided not only a memorable opportunity for Colin’s family, friends, and colleagues to gather to remember him, but also the perfect occasion to launch the BWB Bursary Scheme to ensure his legacy lives on. This will provide for talented students looking to pursue a career in engineering, valuable financial support and work experience whilst undertaking their university studies. BWB believes in equal access to educational opportunities for all; the array of annual bursaries, work experience and prizes included in the scheme will hopefully assist selected NTU Engineering students in achieving their dreams
We have also purchased and gifted to NTU a state-of-the-art structural testing frame for engineering students to use and experiment with during their practical studies.
“BWB is truly honoured to enable Colin’s legacy to our business and profession to live on by providing the Bursary Scheme for engineering students at Nottingham Trent University,” says BWB Chief Executive Steve Wooler. “I’m sure Colin would have found this a fitting way to encourage and support young people to follow in his footsteps. The gift of the structural testing frame in the Department’s laboratory will hopefully resonate with the students who use it and remind them they will be testing and experimenting with structural elements much as Colin would have done in the late 1970s – gaining knowledge and expertise that he used to such great effect during his career as a brilliant structural engineer.
I know that Colin’s family and former colleagues who attended the Memorial Lecture and toured the Department’s facilities were deeply touched that Colin’s legacy has been commemorated this way. BWB is proud to be strengthening our relationship with NTU in a way that provides both practical and financial support to students who may themselves, one day, attain the reputation and professional respect that Colin Langford achieved during his long and highly successful career.”
A huge thank you must also go to Dr Paula Carey, Co-founder and Chief Technical Officer at Carbon8 Systems who delivered a very informative and insightful lecture on the very topical subject of reducing the construction industry’s carbon footprint.
