Unlocking Urban Potential: Planning Approval for 12 Homes in Hammersmith

BWB Consulting is proud that the Tesco Barb Mews Residential Development in Brook Green, Hammersmith & Fulham, has received unanimous planning approval.

Delivered for Landhold Developments, the project will transform surplus land adjacent to a Tesco store into 12 highly sustainable family homes, each designed to meet net-zero carbon standards and deliver a 10% Biodiversity Net Gain.

Turning Brownfield Land into Opportunity

Barb Mews is a prime example of how innovative urban regeneration can unlock value and deliver meaningful environmental outcomes.

Situated on underutilised brownfield land, previously part of a supermarket car park, the scheme responds directly to London’s housing needs while advancing the ambitions of both the GLA London Plan and Hammersmith & Fulham’s Climate Change SPD.

The design focuses on sustainability, comfort, and community, combining renewable energy technologies such as Air Source Heat Pumps and solar PV with smart ventilation and high-performance building fabric to create efficient, low-carbon homes.

BWB’s Role in Driving Healthy Places

Our expert integrated Healthy Places team provided comprehensive support from the early feasibility stages through to planning approval.

Our team delivered:

  • Ground engineering and contamination remediation ensured the site was safely prepared for residential use.
  • Air quality and noise assessments, optimising the design for a healthy living environment.
  • Energy and sustainability strategy, achieving full net zero readiness.
  • Biodiversity and ecology planning, including on-site enhancements and off-site habitat creation to secure measurable gains.

Working within a live retail environment brought unique logistical and safety challenges, requiring careful coordination to minimise disruption while delivering technical excellence.

A Model for Compact, Low-Carbon Living

Beyond the technical achievements, Barb Mews highlights the potential of small urban sites to make a significant environmental impact.

The project demonstrates how collaboration, creativity, and evidence-based sustainability can bring underutilised spaces back to life, creating homes that are efficient, resilient, and contribute to London’s broader net-zero goals.

With planning now secured, Barb Mews stands as a benchmark for sustainable residential regeneration in West London and a blueprint for future small-scale site transformations.
