Client: University of Nottingham The RAD Building, located on the University of Nottingham's Jubilee Campus, is a state-of-the-art research facility focused on energy efficiency and sustainability. This £7 million development provides specialised laboratory spaces dedicated to cutting-edge research areas, such as wind energy storage and hydrogen material development. Designed with high-quality single and multiple occupancy offices, the building also features technical support bases and a central atrium with breakout spaces, fostering collaboration and innovation among researchers. The RAD Building combines BREEAM standards with Passivhaus principles, achieving exceptional energy efficiency and comfort levels. Services we provided Civil & Infrastructure Engineering Environmental & Sustainability Consulting Geotechnical & Ground Engineering Ground Investigation & Land Quality Structural Engineering Water Engineering & Flood Risk Our Role BWB was involved from the early stages of the RAD Building project, providing integrated services across civil, structural, and environmental engineering disciplines. Our initial engagement included conducting site investigations and developing a geotechnical strategy to address ground conditions. Full structural design Following the site investigations, we developed a structural design solution that incorporated CFA piles with pile caps and ground beams to support the new structure. Our team collaborated closely with the architect to incorporate Passivhaus principles into the building’s design, focusing on features such as high insulation levels, airtightness, and sloped glazing. Ground investigation Our assessments revealed contaminants, including asbestos and large diesel tanks, that needed to be remediated to ensure the site was safe for development. Following the site investigations, we developed a structural design solution that incorporated CFA piles with pile caps and ground beams to support the new structure. Sustainable delivery Our team’s expertise enabled us to deliver a building that met the client’s sustainability and performance goals. The RAD Building was designed to achieve BREEAM Excellent standards and incorporates Passivhaus principles, making it one of the most energy-efficient buildings of its type in the UK.
