Client: CAF

The Parramatta Light Rail project in Sydney, Australia, is a vital £240 million transport initiative designed to improve public transport across Western Sydney. Stage 1 spans 12 km of dual-track alignment, connecting 16 stations through a mix of on-street and dedicated corridors.

The light rail system will link key hubs, such as the Parramatta CBD, Westmead Health Precinct, and Camellia Town Centre, helping reduce road congestion and provide a reliable, efficient transport alternative to private car use. Expected to be operational by 2023, this project will support sustainable growth and urban regeneration in the region.

Our Role

BWB was embedded within CAF’s Engineering team to deliver the signalling solution for the entire light rail network. Our scope included design interface management, manufacture, installation, testing, commissioning, and entry into service of the chosen signalling system.

International collaboration

We coordinated with teams across Australia, the UK, Spain, and Italy to ensure that all design and delivery milestones were met. This collaborative approach, combined with our technical expertise, enabled us to overcome the logistical and technical challenges inherent in a project of this scale.

Digital delivery

Our sister company, Deetu, acted as the Digital Engineering Lead, ensuring the seamless integration of complex infrastructure data through the development of the Digital Engineering Execution Plan (DEXP). They delivered a suite of high-value technical outputs, including Federated 3D models and GIS Datasets, which provided a single source of truth for design and construction across the entire route.

By managing project-wide Information Exchange Datasets and coordinating closely with the TfNSW Digital Engineering team, they ensured that every phase of the project was underpinned by robust, accessible, and high-quality digital asset information.

Civil expertise

BWB's Rail Civils Team also provided peer review and value engineering services to CAF for all the drainage and civil structures on the project, including bridges, OHW supports, retaining structures and stop structures.
