Client: Mountpark

The Oxford Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (OxSRFI) is a proposed 6.5 million square foot logistics hub situated near Junction 10 of the M40. Designed as a Nationally Significant Infrastructure Project (NSIP), the development will combine road and rail infrastructure to enhance sustainable freight movement.

It includes a state-of-the-art rail freight interchange, providing direct access to the national rail network, and various green initiatives such as Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) to manage surface water and minimise environmental impact. OxSRFI is expected to generate significant economic benefits by reducing road congestion and carbon emissions, while creating new jobs and supporting local business growth.

Our Role

BWB was engaged as the lead technical consultant for OxSRFI, delivering comprehensive services including geotechnical, geo-environmental, and utilities assessments. Our team provided technical support for the Environmental Statement, contributing expertise in ground investigations, contaminated land management, and infrastructure planning.

Ground engineering

This included stabilising the ground to accommodate heavy infrastructure and ensuring that the landfill was managed in compliance with environmental standards. Another key challenge was securing approval for the project’s highway and rail infrastructure designs, which required close coordination with multiple stakeholders, including local councils and National Highways.

Drainage expertise

We developed a site-wide drainage strategy that incorporated Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS) to manage surface water and reduce flood risks. This included stabilising the ground to accommodate heavy infrastructure and ensuring that the landfill was managed in compliance with environmental standards.

Stakeholder engagement

Another key challenge was securing approval for the project’s highway and rail infrastructure designs, which required close coordination with multiple stakeholders, including local councils and National Highways. Our expertise in regulatory processes ensured that all designs were approved on time, keeping the project on track.
