Client: Nexus The Nexus Switch and Crosses project involved renewing life-expired Switch and Crossing (S&C) units at three key locations within the Nexus rail network. This £3 million project was critical to maintaining the operational efficiency and safety of the rail infrastructure, ensuring reliable services for thousands of daily passengers in the region. The scope included a comprehensive survey and design package, including laser-scanning topographical surveys, platform gauging analysis, and condition assessments of local rail assets. These preparatory works enabled detailed design of track alignments, platform clearances, and overhead line electrification (OLE) systems. Services we provided Rail Engineering Building Surveying Water Engineering & Flood Risk Our Role BWB’s role in the Nexus Switch and Crossing project included a comprehensive scope of survey and design work. We conducted a laser scanning topographical survey of each site, followed by platform gauging analysis and condition assessments of local rail assets. This data served as the basis for our detailed track alignment designs, S&C drawings, and Overhead Line Electrification (OLE) designs. Structural clearance Our team also delivered structural clearance analysis and technical expertise to support the client in selecting a suitable contractor for the installation phase. This integrated approach ensured that all design elements were fully coordinated and met the client’s requirements. Detailed designs The project’s city-centre location posed several constraints, particularly for underground works. Our team developed detailed designs that met these tight constraints, including recommendations for remedial works to address the structural integrity of older tunnels. Our vast experience with light rail and slab-track environments paved the way for our designs to succeed, enabling us to provide a speedy and comprehensive service to our clients.
