The Loughborough Student Village is a dynamic new development that adds 617 bedrooms and an Elite Athletes Centre to the heart of Loughborough University's campus. Designed to meet the growing demand for student accommodation, the project provides high-quality living spaces tailored to promote health and wellbeing.

The Elite Athletes Centre features 20 adjustable climatic bedrooms, which can simulate altitudes of up to 5,000 metres, offering a unique high-performance training environment for both able-bodied and disabled athletes. The landscape design integrates elements of sport into the fabric of the campus, with features such as a running track-inspired access route, climbing walls, trampolines, and an outdoor gym.

Our Role

BWB was engaged to deliver integrated civil and structural engineering services for the Loughborough Student Village project. Our role included conducting a flood risk assessment and designing a flood alleviation scheme to protect the development from potential flooding.

Ground expertise

Our expertise in ground investigations allowed us to design stable foundations that supported the new structures, accommodating the complex climatic rooms and high-performance training facilities. Additionally, we were responsible for the civil and structural design of the buildings, incorporating off-site construction methods to streamline the construction process and enhance the quality of the finished product.

Flood risk

This comprehensive assessment highlighted flood risks in the area, and our team implemented measures to mitigate them effectively, including developing a drainage design that integrated seamlessly with the site’s overall layout.

Structural design

Additionally, we were responsible for the civil and structural design of the buildings, incorporating off-site construction methods to streamline the construction process and enhance the quality of the finished product. This approach helped reduce the need for on-site work, minimising disruption and expediting the project timeline.
