Project overview

Leeds is a thriving city and has seen significant growth in its economy and population. This includes an increase in the number of children and young people in the area, especially those who may need specialist support, particularly in disadvantaged groups.

Following increased demand for social, emotional and mental health support (SEMH), Leeds City Council commissioned the refurbishment of three ageing city centre schools to be transformed into three world-class SEMH school facilities.

These schools provide specialist services aimed towards the unique needs and personal challenges of young people with SEMH needs to allow them to learn and grow.

  • £40million constuction cost
  • Over 300 pupil places
  • Over 200 staff

BWB's role

Multi-disciplinary Excellence

We provided a range of multi-disciplinary services for the project, ensuring tight deadlines were met and client specifications were adhered to. Our services included civil and structural engineering, earthworks, environmental consulting, foundation design, geotechnical engineering, and transport assessment and planning.

Logistical Challenges

We provided safe solutions for decanting current facilities on live sites to allow services to run concurrently across three logistically challenging sites. This method permitted 300 young people to start school in the new term.

Engineering Design

We also ensured the designs met several crucial specifications, including easy maintenance and cost efficiency. The learning environments were designed to meet various educational needs and behaviours while being robust and sustainable.

Revitalising Communities

This refurbishment project brought new life into previously redundant sites, enhancing local landscapes and providing much-needed services to those who need them.
