Client: Tilbury Douglas

The Brandon Unit, part of Leicester General Hospital, is being transformed into a state-of-the-art Planned Care Centre. Originally built in 1977 and standing vacant for over a decade, this three-storey building is undergoing a comprehensive refurbishment to tackle waiting lists for planned procedures.

The redevelopment includes new wards, operating theatres, treatment rooms, and support spaces, with over 700 replacement windows, a new roof, plant rooms, and boosted water tank installations, aligning with the building's 'net zero carbon ready' strategy. This project aims to revitalise the space, bringing it back into active use as an exemplary care hub.

Our Role

BWB is providing a range of integrated engineering services for the refurbishment of the Brandon Unit. Our team has been heavily involved in conducting load assessments and surveys of the existing building to determine its structural stability and floor-to-floor heights.

Drainage design

We also worked on the design and implementation of new drainage systems, integrating them with the existing channels to avoid additional costs and time delays that would have been incurred by creating new drainage paths. This solution not only ensured the project’s efficiency but also minimised disruptions to the hospital's ongoing operations.

Coordination challenges

One of the primary challenges was coordinating the mechanical and electrical services within the existing structure, ensuring that they did not interfere with major structural elements. Our team’s expertise ensured that this coordination was successfully achieved while maintaining the building’s structural stability.
