Client: Deeley Construction The £1.8 million expansion at Blue Coat Church of England School in Coventry added a 4,090-square-foot building dedicated to the sixth form. This modern facility increases the school’s capacity by accommodating an additional 60 students and features classrooms designed to foster a more engaging learning environment. Funded by Coventry City Council and delivered in collaboration with Deeley Construction and Lucas Architects, the project aligns with the school’s vision to support academic excellence through improved infrastructure. The new sixth form block was built with a focus on creating more space and resources for students to thrive. Services we provided Civil & Infrastructure Engineering Ground Investigation & Land Quality Structural Engineering Water Engineering & Flood Risk Our Role Our role included structural engineering services for the steel frame design and concrete pad foundation. We collaborated closely with the contractor and architect to develop a robust structural solution that addressed site-specific challenges, ensuring a safe and efficient build process. Civil expertise Our civil engineering team also supported the design and installation of drainage systems, ensuring compliance with local regulations and minimising disruption to the existing site infrastructure. Additionally, we played a critical role in quality assurance by inspecting and approving steel frame materials to ensure they met project specifications. Proactive designs Throughout the project, BWB proactively identified and resolved on-site issues, including unexpected obstructions in foundation areas. We adjusted our designs accordingly and coordinated with the site team to keep the project on schedule. Overcoming challenges One of the main challenges encountered was an unforeseen issue with a damaged drainage pipe, which was not identified in the original plans. We promptly redesigned the drainage layout to accommodate the new site conditions, preventing delays and ensuring that the drainage system performed as intended.
