Commissioned in 2024 by the City of Doncaster Council, this project focused on developing natural flood management (NFM) solutions across two discrete sites within the Bentley Stream catchment. The aim was to support a DEFRA funding application by creating nature-based flood alleviation and amenity enhancements through high-level concept design and flood risk assessment. The scheme included reconnection of natural floodplains, wetland creation, biodiversity support, and new public access via footpaths. This delivered both flood mitigation and social value. It was the only project in Yorkshire that successfully secured DEFRA funding in its category. Key features included: Two discreet sites Renovation of public access Improvement to biodiversity Services we provided Water Engineering & Flood Risk Project, Cost & Commercial Management Our role BWB Consulting provided complete multidisciplinary services on the project. Initially engaged in feasibility design and flood risk assessments, we developed hydraulic models to assess potential flood impacts. We also supported the council in submitting a robust business case for DEFRA funding. Expert design services Following the funding award, BWB delivered detailed designs across both sites, one focused on floodplain reconnection, and the other involving wetland creation, natural flood storage, and public access improvements. Our civil and ground engineering teams designed nature-based features, including wetland basins, leaky dams made from local materials, and right-of-way realignment to improve usability and discourage antisocial behaviour. Stakeholder management We also led stakeholder engagement, environmental assessments, and assurance, ensuring the design process aligned with biodiversity goals and sustainable design principles. Fast-paced programme The programme required rapid mobilisation of design, surveying, and modelling teams to complete the feasibility assessment within weeks. BWB managed a large volume of environmental and site data within compressed timescales. Effective internal coordination and agile delivery allowed us to meet critical submission dates and secure the funding outcome.
