Discovering My Path to Engineering
My journey to becoming an engineer started back in college. At the time, I was undecided on what career path I wanted to pursue, and I spent a lot of time researching my options.
When I came across Civil Engineering, I immediately knew this was the right path for me. It aligned perfectly with my interests and offered a career that combined my passion for problem-solving, creativity, and making a real-world impact. That decision set me on the path I walk today as a woman in engineering.
Working Together to Create Places for Everyone
I support and collaborate with others by actively listening, sharing knowledge, and valuing different perspectives. I always aim to create spaces for everyone, ensuring that people feel heard, seen, and included.
I focus on supporting women in STEM, knowing firsthand how challenging it can be to thrive in such a male-dominated field. By creating supportive, inclusive environments, I help break down barriers and open doors for others to succeed.
My Proudest Achievement: Earning My Degree
One of my proudest achievements has been completing my university degree in engineering. This accomplishment was the result of many sleepless nights, years of hard work, and incredible perseverance.
Throughout my studies, I faced numerous challenges, both academically and personally. The global pandemic during Covid added more uncertainty and difficulty to an already demanding period. Overcoming these hurdles made my achievement even more meaningful and valuable. It represents academic success, resilience, determination, and growth.
Navigating Challenges as a Woman in Engineering
One of the most significant challenges I’ve faced has been overcoming the pressure to constantly prove myself in a male-dominated field. At times, it felt as though the goalpost was constantly shifting, which could easily shake my confidence.
However, my passion for what I do has helped me to navigate these challenges and build a successful career in engineering. This experience has also driven my commitment to encourage young females to enter, pursue, and thrive in this field.
I believe that women can overcome these challenges, push through adversity, and become successful women engineers. As women in a male-dominated profession, supporting and inspiring others who want to take on this role is important.
My Advice to Future Female Engineers
Believe in yourself and go for it – especially when it feels hard and scary. Don’t let fear hold you back from doing something you are passionate about, particularly when you see a lack of representation.
Be the lead. Represent. Your passion and courage can inspire others, and your voice has the power to create change.
