Trent Basin

Trent Basin is a transformative urban regeneration project situated on Nottingham’s historic Waterside. Designed around communal spaces, the project promotes sustainable living and green urban environments. Located just two miles from Nottingham city centre, Trent Basin embraces the city’s riverside character, offering residents waterside views and direct access to nature.

Key project details include:

  • Approximately 500 low-energy homes: Providing vital new housing within Nottingham
  • 3.5-hectare brownfield site revitalised: Transforming a previously derelict industrial area
  • Community energy scheme: Featuring solar panels and battery storage for sustainable energy use
  • Enhanced green spaces: Including a 'water garden' and recreational areas for residents, boosting biodiversity
  • Waterside access: Providing residents with direct access to the River Trent and its scenic surroundings

Our Role

Appointed by Blueprint, we provide comprehensive pre-planning support and multi-disciplinary engineering design services for the Trent Basin scheme. Our expertise spanned the adoptable infrastructure, civil engineering, and structural engineering components of this complex project.

Our integrated approach ensured seamless coordination between our different engineering disciplines, leading to efficient and effective solutions that met the unique challenges of the Trent Basin site.

Pre-Planning Support and Site Surveys

Our team conducted extensive site surveys to identify and map existing services and infrastructure, which included topographical, utilities, and CCTV drainage assessments. This comprehensive analysis informed the planning and design processes, ensuring that all potential challenges were identified and addressed early in the project.

Innovative Foundation Solutions

The complex ground conditions and the presence of 3-metre-high 1930s concrete retaining structures along the river's edge were significant challenges. Our engineering team collaborated with the Environment Agency and developed an innovative Vibro stone column foundation solution. As a result, the approach stabilised the ground and minimised environmental impact.

In addition, we coordinated closely with the contractor, thereby ensuring the chosen solution aligned with regulatory requirements and project timelines.

Sustainable Drainage Strategies

Our drainage team faced challenges in discharging water directly into the River Trent. We worked with the Environment Agency to obtain the necessary permits and technical approvals, allowing us to implement a sustainable drainage strategy that met all environmental regulations.

Our expertise and experience with similar brownfield developments in the area enabled us to overcome these challenges and support the client through each phase of the project's development.
