I am a commercially driven, customer focused and rounded engineer who works hard to remain at the forefront of emerging technology.
A STEM ambassador did a presentation at my school when I was 16 years old which showed me that I was capable of becoming an engineer with my skills and interests in maths, physics and economics. When I was 17 I was offered the chance to do a 2-week placement at a superb local design consultancy in Belfast which got me hooked. The thought of working in a dynamic multi-disciplinary environment where I could influence infrastructure that would exist for future generations and also get paid to travel the world was very attractive. That is the reason why I am a STEM ambassador today and passionate Supervising Civil Engineer hoping to inspire and develop the next generation!
As a wee lad in Belfast I grew up in shadow of the troubles until I moved away to study at university in England. I studied at University of Bradford which did a unique course at the time combining civil and structural engineering not knowing which of the two I wanted to pursue. I then did a Masters degree at University of Dundee in Construction Management and Concrete Technology. I then went to City University London to be a lecturer and researcher in building design and concrete technology for 3 years. At the end of that phase of my life I decided my real passion was design, so I started at the Maunsell based in London and got involved in some exciting projects in UK, US, Taiwan and Greece. The most challenging was Taiwan High Speed Rail where I had to design and build with Contractor Bilfinger and Berger a 52 km long reinforced concrete ‘bridge on stilts’ using a mix of American and Japanese design standards. The train was to travel at 350km/h in the worst seismic region of the world with the worst ground conditions I have ever experienced which caused a few sleepless nights. I then went to work for Network Rail first as an Asset Manager which was fascinating learning how a major infrastructure owner operates then building and leading the internal design team until I joined BWB Consulting.
I’ve not been here that long but looking forward to working on many great projects.
Running, long-distance walking, snowboarding, motorbiking and spending time with my wife and 4 daughters.
Learning, developing and still being challenged to produce my best work.
