Severn Trent Water HQ, Coventry

Severn Trent Water HQ, Coventry

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

BWB Consulting was appointed by Stoford Developments Ltd to provide civil, structural, geo-environmental, flood and traffic services on Severn Trent's £35m Headquarters Building in Coventry City centre. The BREEAM excellent rated office block sets new industry standards, with one of the lowest carbon footprints for any UK office building.

The 170,000 sq ft, seven-storey centre, home to up to 1,700 staff, was built by BAM Construction with the help of £6.5m from Advantage West Midlands and support from Coventry City Council. The building comprises two seven storey wings, arranged around a central atrium. Car parking is provided above and below ground with a three basement levels and a further three levels provided above ground in the south wing.

The brownfield site contained a number of constraints including existing buildings, adjacent highways/footpaths, and utility services. BWB developed a detailed constraints plan and methodology for investigating and quantifying the abnormal costs associated with resolving each engineering challenge.

Key Challenges

The concrete frame solution utilised post tensioned slabs for the office floor plates with exposed soffits and insitu concrete floors for the car park levels. The basement walls were formed using secant piles with internal columns founded off pad bases within the sandstone strata.

As part of the overall scheme BWB successfully negotiated off site highway works for the Section 278 agreements with the local authority.
