The Transport Planning expertise of BWB played a key role in helping Barratt Homes secure outline planning consent for 100 homes in the village of Newton Solney, Derbyshire. We were commissioned by the developer to undertake highway authority negotiations and expert witness as part of the scheme's initial planning application and subsequent appeal.
The proposed site lies on the county border with Staffordshire, which meant BWB had to secure approval from two Highway Authorities. Both had conflicting opinions on how to deal with the lack of pedestrian footway on the side of Newton Road nearest the site, with one requiring the installation of a pavement while the other stated this wasn't necessary. BWB achieved a compromise by successfully arguing that as most journeys on foot involve crossing a road, pedestrians could simply use the pavement on the other side. We provided evidence that the highway was not dangerous to cross and had no safety or speed issues. We secured approval from both authorities although the development was initially refused planning consent on landscape grounds. We continued to provide support through the appeal process, until approval was finally granted.
