The Pod development is an important landmark site in the heart of the City of Nottingham. It consists of three retail floors, a two storey bar and restaurant complete with a terrace garden and a four storey hotel over the retail floors. The hotel also utilises a retained Victorian frontage to form a contrasting street level entrance.
BWB had a long standing involvement in the project and acted as adjudicators on behalf of the developer during the Architectural design competition. We worked closely with the appointed Architect to cost-effectively deliver their vision for the building through the structure.
The building includes large glazed areas and various cantilevering structures that give the appearance that parts of the building are defying gravity. To suit retail demands, BWB employed a wide grid layout for the structure which was achieved by utilising post tensioned concrete flat slab construction. The complexity of the superstructure is matched below ground where complex foundations were required to support the building over an existing railway tunnel.
