BWB Consulting were a major part of the winning bid team put together to deliver the School Of Health and Sport Science Extension for Teesside University at their city centre campus in Middlesbrough. The proposed scheme involves the design and detailing of a 4 storey laboratory and teaching facility with a large multi use forum space split over 4 levels.
Many structural engineering super structure options were explored by the proactive BWB Consulting delivery team to ensure that the Architect's vision for the structure could be successfully delivered by the main contractor on time and on budget. The final solution involved the innovative use of bespoke precast coffered floor units to act as structural members, as a finished ceiling and thermal mass. The integration of these units with the teaching facilities created clean high ceilings perfect for the integration of chilled beams.
The new facility was built immediately adjacent to the existing school during term time. This required careful structural detailing to ensure that the proposed development had minimal intrusion into the existing structure.
