PROJECT DESCRIPTION

BWB played a key role in the successful delivery of a new bridge over the Great Western Main Line at Shrivenham, Oxfordshire. The project was part of the Great Western Electrification, with the new structure needing to provide the required clearance for overhead lines to be installed on the railway running underneath.

BWB delivered detailed highway, drainage, earthworks and geotechnical designs for the approach roads. We worked closely with Network Rail and contractor AMCO Rail to completely remodel the approach roads on both sides of the bridge in order to achieve the required increase in level over the railway. Our design also introduced improved pedestrian facilities, better drainage and a wider carriageway to improve road safety on this stretch of the B4000. BWB's Transport Planning team carried out Road Safety Audits, working in collaboration with Oxfordshire County Council, AMCO Rail and Thames Valley Police once the bridge had opened to the public.

The bridge reconstruction was just one of a number of similar projects BWB delivered as part of Network Rail's commitment to deliver rail electrification schemes across the country.
