The Trent Basin scheme is a proposed sustainable urban neighbourhood comprising an initial scheme for 41 homes followed by a wider scheme for 119 homes representing a further four phases of development. The site is situated approximately 2 miles south-east of Nottingham City centre along the north bank of the River Trent and lies around a water inlet, which was built as a 'Docks and Inland Waterways Depot'. The basin would have been used to store and transfer goods between the surrounding industrial estates and onto boats, which would transport goods along the river. The site has seen a decline in industry over the last few years, with warehouses becoming redundant and operation of the Basin ceasing in recent years.
BWB was appointed by Blueprint to provide pre-planning support services and are now undertaking design services for the adoptable infrastructure as well as civil and structural engineering services associated with the scheme. BWB have also undertaken a detailed topographical survey of the site and underground utilities surveys and CCTV drainage surveys to identify the existing services and drainage.
BWB have resolved a range of complexities associated with developing an industrial site retained by 1930's concrete structures 3m above the Trent. Phase 1 is nearing completion, Phase 2 has recently been submitted for planning with future Phases to follow in the near future.
The design of the foundations to the houses and apartments proposed a particular challenge as the traditional solution was deemed to be unviable due to potential environmental impacts. BWB's expertise and experience with nearby sites, along with our understanding of the ground conditions, worked in close consultation with the Environment Agency and Contractor to enable us to develop a Vibro stone piled solution that will minimise impact to the environment.
