The former Prince of Wales colliery site near Junction 32 of the M62 on the northern outskirts of Pontefract is to be regenerated into a mixed-use development comprising approximately 900 homes and 21,500sq.m of employment development when complete.
In December 2013, an earthworks and remediation enabling works contract was awarded which facilitated the first phases of the housing development. BWB provided planning support services to help secure a successful planning determination and BWB were contracted to carry out infrastructure design services, utilities advice, topographical survey, contract administration, site supervision and CDM Co-ordinator services for Harworth Estates.
These services included full earthworks design utilising problematic on-site materials to provide suitable development platforms. Design and on-site validation was agreed with NHBC who provided LQE certification. Full-time site supervision by experienced geotechnical staff was required as day-to-day changes of excavated materials was a common occurrence so rapid on-site assessments were necessary. Fully warranted validation reports were also provided.
The former colliery site posed several potential geotechnical and ground contamination risks which were carefully managed by the Contractor and BWB's site supervisory staff in accordance with BWB's Earthworks Specification and Remediation Strategy to ensure that the site would be suitable for future housing development.
