The projects aim was to refurbish the existing building to provide a more agile, collaborative working environment. The work comprised the refurbishment and alterations to the main Civic Offices, including repairs and maintenance of the existing features in line with Listed Building Consent. The existing main civic offices are constructed on basement, ground and two upper floors.
The building has historic local importance with many of the internal finishes and fixtures included in a Listed Buildings report maintained by Historic England. Gaining a full understanding of the elements covered by the listed building report took some effort before plans to preserve the listed elements could be formulated.
Our experience in aiding clients to refurbish and subsequently operate similar civic focused accommodation enabled efficient communication with the clients facilities team where an understanding of backlog maintenance work could easily be wrapped into the redevelopment plans. This affected much of the centralised plant and distribution systems which were approaching the end of their working life expectancy with plans agreed on how to replace the plant on a phased basis.
The civic offices building is an intrinsic part of the local community and the redevelopment provided significant improvement to the important facilities required for our client to interact with the community.
