BWB were appointed to deliver the design of a new footbridge spanning over the existing railway (Brighton lines). BWB were involved from scope definition up to and including detailed design. The project is currently at option selection stage where weathering steel and fibre reinforced plastic (FRP) are being considered as possible material options. BWB liaised with key stakeholders, the local authority and Network Rail to agree design process and deliverables.
We have currently submitted preliminary designs, pre-approval in principle (AIP) narrative and option selection report. Future submissions will include AIP design and detailed design for construction. BWB will also be involved in appointing and managing a Contractor to construct the proposed footbridge.
The proposed footbridge is an access for all structure and will consist of both ramp and step access. A challenge was to ensure the ramps fitted within the proposed site boundary footprints as well as trying to keep ramp lengths and numbers to a minimum.
Regardless of which material option is selected both options will introduce whole life cost savings with regards to minimal maintenance requirements to the main span whilst reducing risks to working on or near the railway. BWB proposed a standard footbridge form as the basis for the design, which assisted with approval from regulators and the known form gives buildability certainty and assurance to contractors.
