Pinner High School consists of several interlinking buildings which were built at different times throughout its history, the original quadrant shaped building and tower dates from 1937.
BWB were appointed as structural and civil engineers for the refurbishment of the entire school in 3 phases, allowing the school to remain operational throughout the works.
The works involved bringing the school up to a high services specification, incorporating new service routes and assessing the structural capacity for the alterations.
BWB instigated intrusive structural investigations to check assumptions made on capacity to take additional services loads and on general integrity. During the investigations, some of the columns were found to have defective concrete and some beams were found to have insufficient reinforcement.
BWB developed a solution to strengthen columns and beams where necessary in conjunction with a specialist, this included carbon fibre reinforcement bonded to the underside of some of the beams and steel channel strengthening to the columns.
