Development of circa 90Ha of greenfield farmland to form an industrial / distribution hub off the A194 in Gateshead. BWB have provided multi-disciplinary engineering services to successfully deliver the infrastructure design, creating two large development plateaus.
The site provided a number of engineering constraints that needed to be overcome. These included constructing 2 large development plateaus on a 90Ha site which involved almost 250,000m3 of earthworks and 15,000m3 of surface water attenuation.
Other significant constraints included the diversion of a gas main and the assessment of the effects of filling over an intermediate pressure gas main with close liaison with Northern Gas Networks.
Flood Risk Management and the restoration of the River Don to the South of the site were also great successes for this project.
The project was delivered on time and to budget. An earthworks balance prevented any material being exported from site.
The attenuation ponds and river restoration works have drastically improved the natural habitat of the site with BWB working closely with local stakeholders including the EA, Durham Wildlife Trust and Gateshead Council SuDS teams.
Follingsby Max is at the heart of the Gateshead Enterprise Zone and represents a unique opportunity for business expansion and relocation. Businesses locating on the site will enjoy reduced business rates worth up to £275,000 as well as training, recruitment and workforce development initiatives.
