BWB Consulting is proud to have been involved in the construction of a 250-metre outdoor tarmac velodrome at the University of York. The £1.1m development on the Heslington East campus was to provide facilities for local track cyclists who previously had to travel to Manchester to train.
Jointly funded by British Cycling and the university, the velodrome was designed for speed with 30-degree banking which riders negotiate on track bikes with no gears or brakes. The design work was carried out by Aecom while BWB was appointed by the university to oversee the construction of the velodrome from a technical perspective. We carried out site visits once a week and produced inspection reports following each visit stating our findings and recommendations.
The project was successfully completed in 2014 and is part of a wider expansion of the campus which includes further sports facilities along with the addition of new academic and residential buildings.
