Development of a new 300,000 sq ft retail development for IKEA including new retail space, warehousing external car parking and landscaping.
Due to the topography of the site, planning restrictions on the building height and the need to provide a single level plateau; a large (up to 9m high) retaining wall has been constructed to the Western Boundary of the site.
The optimum solution in terms of cost and buildability was a soil nailed wall with a gabion face to provide an aesthetic finish.
The wall was constructed in a top down sequence to suit cut/fill operations. The wall is angled at 70 degrees to the vertical to minimise land loss.
Close liaison with Devon CC highways department was required, including underpinning of the footbridge over the A379 requiring a complex Approval In Principle to be agreed.
The project was completed on time and to budget. BWB worked closely with the professional team and main contractor throughout each stage of the project to identify best value for the client. Programme was also critical to allow the retail fit-out team to gain early access to areas of the store to meet the strict store opening deadline.
