York Sport Village was a £9 million sports facility on Heslington East Campus that featured a competition-standard, eight lane, 25-metre swimming pool, learner pool, full size 3G Astroturf pitch and three further five-a-side pitches. Additional facilities included a 100-station computerised fitness suite, floorspace for classes such as spinning and yoga, three specialist treatment rooms, sauna and steam rooms and a cafeteria.
BWB was commissioned to provide a range of multidisciplinary services for the project including civil, structural and geotechnical engineering, drainage strategies and infrastructure design.
Challenging ground conditions at the site would normally have led to the use of piled foundations, which would have brought the project over budget. However BWB carried out detailed analysis of the ground conditions and was able to offer the University a more cost-effective non-piled foundation solution.
