New 2 storey & single storey Sixth Form Teaching Block on a brownfield site, within the grounds of the President Kennedy School
The project comprised of a braced, 2 storey and single storey steel frame with composite deck first floor, ground bearing ground floor slab and pad foundations.
The building envelope was formed from a light weight cold rolled steel frame system (SFS), with metal deck supported on purlins at roof level, incorporating feature roof lights, vents and PV panels. Civil works included below ground drainage design, incorporating an assessment of outfall feasibility to an existing culvert, S106 negotiations and Ordinary Watercourse Consent (OWC).
The programme was tight with construction stage commencing late December 2020 to opening for Sixth Form student intake in September 2021. To achieve this required the following design activities. Re-design of the floor system and roof deck support to match material availability and the contractors supply chain.
Rationalisation of the feature staircase and their supporting Y-columns to achieve the Architectural requirements within the tight programme constraints
To add value we undertook a Value Engineering design review and worked with the Geotechnical engineer to remove some of the site risks enabling the use of a ground bearing floor slab and reduced depth to foundation formation. The project provides a standalone sixth form facility within the existing school campus but independent of the main school building, enhancing the post 16 education provision and providing an overall increase of 150 school places for a growing local population.
