Resorts World, Birmingham

PROJECT DESCRIPTION

BWB Consulting is proud to have been the Civil and Structural Engineers for Resorts World at Birmingham's NEC. The £150m development includes a casino, four star hotel and five-star suites, spa including 15m pool and fitness suite, conference and banqueting facilities, a retail outlet centre, a multi- screen cinema, food and beverage outlets and car parking.

BWB was involved in the project from it's inception and worked closely with the project team to develop commercially viable design solutions. The structure has been designed using state of the art 3D structural engineering software and translated into a Building Information Model (BIM) aids the construction coordination process, provides 4D and 5D cost information and is ultimately a building information management tool for the end users.

Resorts World was the 2015 ACE Engineering Excellence Awards Winner in the Building Structures Category and in 2013 won the IStructE West Midlands Arts and Entertainment Project of the Year.

Key Challenges

Large span clear spaces were required within the casino, over the conferencing suite, cinema and underground service yard. This was compounded by the requirement for the hotel to be sat atop these large spans.

The substructure was a combination of Continuous flight auger piles, traditional mass concrete pad foundations, Secant piled and traditional reinforced concrete retaining walls. The concrete frame was continued above ground terminating at several varying podium levels atop which steelwork frames are to be utilised for the cinema and conference facility.
