BWB Manchester Volunteer Day at Mustard Tree
16 October 2019
BWB's Manchester office recently completed their second volunteer day at Mustard Tree - a regional charity tackling both the causes and consequences of poverty and homelessness.
The day commenced with a brief from the inspiring team at Mustard Tree. This was such a motivating start to the day Lots of praise and very clear pulling together as one big team and truly living their values.
BWB's volunteers quickly got stuck in and supported the Mustard Tree team by:
- Unpacking food donations and placing them on the shelves for the local people to buy.
- Unpacking donated clothes and arranging them for sale.
- Sanding down some woodwork and applying masking tape in the new canteen, which will be ready to open soon.
- Joined in an art and painting work shop.
- Tidying of the shop floor
Throughout the entire day we met such wonderful people and learnt about their journeys relating to their personal experiences. We were also completely blown away by the dedication and commitment of the Mustard Tree team.
Mustard Tree helps people to change their lives, secure better accommodation and economic wellbeing. Their focus is on tackling both the causes and consequences of poverty and homelessness. Since 1994 they have created opportunities for people to help themselves through providing practical support, friendship, connections into work and improvements to health & wellbeing, alongside new experiences to encourage aspiration.
There is a great sense of community and camaraderie with people working so hard to help each other. The Mustard Tree Team are also well equipped to empathise with those they are helping - around 50% of the people who work there have encountered some personal challenges and are now helping others.
As we approach Christmas and the winter weather approaches, homelessness will increase and in preparation Mustard Tree are already preparing an area in their premises to accommodate overnight sleeping.
Lots of help is needed! Please share our story, spread the word, get involved, make a difference!
