MY WORK EXPERIENCE AT BWB: MADDY MACBETH
29 October 2018
Last week student Maddy Macbeth spent her half-term break with our London-based Transport and Infrastructure design team to find out more about a civil engineering career. We spoke to Maddy to discover what she got up to while at BWB and what her plans are for the future.
Why did you choose to do work experience at BWB?
I choose to undertake work experience at BWB during my half term as I wanted to get some experience of civil engineering in the working world to see what it is actually like and the different careers there are to consider, whilst also confirming my choice of a degree for university.
What have you done during your placement?
I was based with the Transport and Infrastructure team and they set me the task to come up with a 2D and 3D model of a drainage system for project London Gateway, Plot 4020A. Through the steps of this process I learnt how to use the basics of AutoCAD and MicroDrainage as well as an understanding generally of how drainage systems work and the things needed to be considered when designing them. At the end of the week I presented my model to the team which was a good experience.
Throughout the week I also talked to many different people in the office and learnt a little about all their different roles I found it interesting how varied all their jobs within the same section of engineering were.
What have you enjoyed most while at BWB?
On the last day of my work experience I was taken to the site at Sugar House Island in Stratford and I really enjoyed seeing all the different aspects I had heard about in the office in real life and gaining an understanding of all the people and steps involved in creating a project.
What are your plans for the future?
I will be taking my A-levels at the end of this year and then hope to go on to study Civil Engineering at university next year.
