BWB’s Helen Payne teamed up with fellow M&E professionals from across the continent on Tuesday to deliver a joint presentation at the GreenBuild Europe sustainability conference in Berlin. Our Building Physics lead took to the stage alongside speakers from Sweden, Spain and Germany to share their knowledge and experience of applying low or zero carbon technologies. As all four speakers came from different countries, they were able to provide the audience with a comparative view on the issues faced by M&E consultancies across Europe.

Helen’s part of the presentation focused on conserving energy and carbon emissions within residential high-rise buildings.  She explained how detailed energy modelling is important in understanding the energy consumption and allows a whole-building approach to be taken, starting with a Fabric First approach.  Helen showed how façade design is particularly important in high-rise developments in meeting carbon reduction targets and reducing resident’s energy bills. Logistics, education and healthcare buildings were discussed by Juan Gallostra of JG Ingenieros, Mirjam Borowietz of ZWP Ingenieur and Maria Perzon of Bengt Dahlgren.

Following the hour-long presentation, Helen said: “It was a fantastic event.  By teaming up with other European consultants we were able to show how we have experience of different countries, different building types, different approaches but we share the same challenges.”

All four consultancies who were represented are members of the First Q Network, a group of mechanical, electrical and building physics consultants from 12 European countries. The network was set up to share resources and best practice knowledge among its members and innovative design solutions across borders for its clients.
