Severn Trent Water HQ
Onwards and Upwards for BWB Birmingham
24 March 2014
2013/14 has been a truly remarkable year for BWB’s Birmingham office. Fuelled by successful appointments on a spate of regionally significant projects such as Severn Trent Water’s HQ in Coventry and Resorts World at the NEC, staff numbers in the office is expected to reach 50 by the end of the year – almost double the number working in the office in 2012!
As well as boasting impressive core civil and structural teams, Birmingham is also the main base for BWB’s Sustainable Building Services team (developed from the acquisition of the mechanical and electrical engineering consultant DKS early in 2013) and is a BWB Water Services ‘centre of excellence’.
Success breeds success and there is a rich and vibrant cultural mix that gives a real buzz to the Birmingham office that recent starters are relishing in:
“I settled into my role quickly and already feel like a valued member of the team. It’s been vital for me to learn a host of new technical skills, including advancing my hydraulic modelling skills and CAD skills, my job would not be possible without them. However, where I feel I have really improved over the last seven months at BWB is my ‘soft’ skills – being more persuasive and confident when in contact with clients and working as part of a team.”
Julian O’Neill, Environmental Consultant
“I started working at BWB’s Birmingham office in January 2013 when the company I worked for merged with them. It was a worrying time as we were all concerned about our new working environment but it should not have been as we were all made to feel very welcome and the Birmingham office in particular is a very warm friendly place with a good team atmosphere. One of the best things about working here is that you are actively encouraged to communicate new ideas and methods of working with your line manager and the Directors. We also have working groups which are set up to formulate new procedures to make our processes more efficient and effective there is also a positive attitude to Corporate Social Responsibility with time being allocated to volunteer for community based projects.”
Helen Payne, Senior Mechanical Engineer
“I am a Junior Electrical Engineer in the BBE Group (Buildings and Built Environment) within BWB and I have been at the Birmingham office since my old company merged with BWB in early 2013. I am keen to develop my skills not only in electrical design but also in gaining knowledge about how companies operate and the financial aspects of running projects. In order to help me with this I joined the BWB Bronze Academy which has given me a good grounding in all aspects of BWB workings and an appreciation of what the other Groups in our company do. I really feel that I have benefitted from attending the sessions and doing the exercises and now I have gained a more in-depth insight into how BWB operate”
Donnacha Kennedy, Junior Electrical Engineer
