BWB’s Pledge to Net Zero – 2020 Annual Report

In January 2020 BWB became a signatory to the Pledge to Net Zero. In doing so we joined other organisations in the environmental services sector in taking a leading role in delivering on the UK’s target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050. As a signatory BWB has pledged to:
- Set, and commit to delivering, a greenhouse gas target in line with the “well below 2 degrees Centigrade” climate change scenario
- Publicly report greenhouse gas emissions and report against this target each year
- Publish one piece of research or thought leadership each year on practical steps to deliver a net zero greenhouse gas economy.
This paper reports progress made in 2020 against our baseline assessment of Scope 1, 2 and 3 emissions in 2019.
Overall, we have seen a 19% reduction in our emissions year on year. This was partly due to the COVID pandemic, which necessitated a rapid shift in working practices. However, we have also made significant strides in the following areas:
- In 2020 we introduced four electric and two self-charging hybrid vehicles to our company car fleet.
- In 2021 we have plans to introduce further electric and hybrid vehicles replacing existing ICE vehicles as their leases expire.
- We have a certified green energy tariff in Manchester and, in December 2020, switched to a green energy tariff at our Leeds office.
- We will be installing smart energy meters at two of our offices in 2021, with the aim of gaining better understanding of office energy consumption patterns.
- In 2021 we launched a new driving initiative with a focus on reducing company business miles and associated carbon emissions, building on greater use of virtual communications.
Short Term Target
In August 2020 we announced the first significant step on our Road to Net Zero by committing to science-based targets to reduce by 30% (from a 2019 base) our greenhouse gas emissions by 2030.
This target covers direct greenhouse gas emissions from company vehicles and air conditioning systems within our control (Scope 1) and the indirect emissions from office electricity consumption (Scope 2). As over 50% of our carbon emissions are associated with business travel (Scope 3) we have set the same challenging target to reduce Scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2030.
We are currently developing a more detailed road map for achieving these targets and have decided to bring forward the objective of achieving our 30% reduction target to 2025
