Reducing our Greenhouse Gas Emissions by 30% by 2030
06 January 2020
In January 2020, BWB became a signatory to the Pledge to Net Zero, joining other organisations in the environmental services sector in taking a leading role in delivering on the UK’s target of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
Since then we have been working hard to gather data and calculate our carbon footprint for 2019, our baseline year. We are now able to announce our first significant step on our road to net zero by committing to science-based targets to reduce our greenhouse gas emissions by 30% by 2030 from our 2019 base year.
Our ambitious targets cover direct greenhouse gas emissions from our company vehicles and the air conditioning systems within our control (scope 1) and the indirect emissions from the electricity used in our offices (scope 2). As over 50% of our carbon emissions are associated with business travel (scope 3), we have also set ourselves the same challenging target to reduce our scope 3 emissions by 30% by 2030.
The targets were developed using the SBTI’s Science-based Targets Setting Tool and align with the well below 2-degree (WB2C) global warming scenario set out in the Paris Agreement.
Chris Miller-Jones (Director Sustainability) commented, "I am excited to be joining BWB as it takes its first steps along the route to achieving a net zero future. This decade is a crucial time for tackling climate change, and I am proud that BWB is committed to making significant reductions to its greenhouse gas emissions by 2030."
