BWB Consulting is Heading for Carbon Net Zero

28 January 2020

Climate change is without doubt the most significant challenge facing our future generations. Policy and population behaviours are increasingly being steered by this issue and the relative urgency for implementing change is becoming apparent. It is essential that Business and the Environmental sector take a lead on this matter.

Following the Government’s announcement in June 2019 of its commitment to reduce all greenhouse gas emissions to Net Zero by 2050, we are delighted to announce that BWB have entered into an industry pledge which commits the company to achieving the same Net Zero target.

The 'Pledge to Net Zero' initiative (link) is formed by the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE), the Environmental Industries Commission (EIC), together with ourselves and other leading environmental consultancies and institutions. The initiative seeks to have the environmental sector take a leadership role in our transition to a Net Zero carbon economy.

In making this pledge we have committed to the following:

- Set and commit to delivering science-based greenhouse gas reduction targets in support of the transition to a net zero carbon economy.

- Publicly report on our greenhouse gas emissions and progress against this target each year.

- Publish one piece of research or thought-leadership piece each year on practical steps we have taken to deliver a net zero economy.

It will be a huge challenge for us to fully integrate the necessary cultural changes to our business by way of a climate response, with our wider established business operations and systems. This is especially the case due to the likely increase in travel associated with our growth plans and increasing involvement in international work. However, in assessing the decision to make the Pledge to Net Zero we soon came to the conclusion that any challenge we faced as a company to adapt, was insignificant compared with the wider challenge of climate change and our obligation to demonstrate environmental leadership during this critical period.
