The Turning Point is Nottingham City Council´s ambitious multi-million pound project to substantially reduce the dominance of motor vehicles and substantially improve public transport facilities in the city centre. The principal objective is to reconnect key parts of the city that, over time, have been severed by heavily trafficked and congested roads to create pedestrian and cycle friendly streets where people feel safe and happy to spend leisure time.
BWB became involved in Turning Point via the Trinity Square redevelopment project. We successfully lobbied for significant changes to the Turning Point proposals required to facilitate the development. The modified scheme is now recognised as an improvement to the original proposals.
Retained initially by the Trinity Square developer, and subsequently by the City Council, we have designed in detail a major part of the project. The city streets are heavily constrained and we have had to overcome the challenges of congested services, antiquated drainage systems and shops and business premises requiring retained access over thresholds that must be kept dry when it rains!
In all the design covers over one kilometre of city streets, seven signal controlled junction installations, including one junction incorporating NET Line 1. High quality paving and street furniture is provided throughout and we have designed traffic signs that will minimise unnecessary and unsightly clutter.
