Toyota in Burnaston

Location: Derbyshire

BWB Consulting were appointed by Weldon Plant to provide civil engineering design services for this Design and Build project to construct a major extension to the vehicle storage and logistics facility at Toyota´s UK manufacturing plant. Phase I of the works has provided approximately 5200 parking spaces. Phase II, when implemented, will provide a further 3000 spaces.

Toyota´s compliant scheme, prepared by their consultant engineer, utilised heavy duty channel drains and conventional below ground pipe work to drain surface water run-off from the 18 Ha site. BWB proposed an innovative alternative scheme that shaped the parking area such that all rainwater run-off was collected in one central large capacity insitu concrete channel. This obviated the need for the majority of the conventional drainage infrastructure which resulted in a cost saving of approximately £350,000. This significant saving, almost 10% of the estimated project value, resulted in Toyota accepting the alternative proposal in preference to the original scheme. Careful design and phasing of the works ensured that the new facility was constructed with minimal disruption to the existing production and dispatch operations.

BWB were subsequently appointed to carry out the design of a new staff car park facility for over 600 cars in another part of the site.
