Desborough and Rothwell SDAs

Location: Northamptonshire

BWB were commissioned to examine the transport implications of introducing mixed employment/residential developments onto greenfield sites in both Desborough and Rothwell, Northamptonshire. The work was required to support the allocation of the sites as Strategic Development Areas within the Kettering Local Plan.

Transportation Scoping Studies were produced for both sites to examine the accessibility to all the main modes of urban transport and to identify the likely highway implications of the schemes. This involved the identification of the optimum access strategy for each site and the design and agreement of appropriate preliminary junction designs.

BWB also prepared Flood Risk Assessments and Engineering Appraisal Desk Studies for both sites which included the following elements:-

  • Identification of the required strategic road network within the individual development sites;
  • Liaison with the local utility companies to identify appropriate load demand criteria with costings for new services and reinforcement of existing networks;
  • Liaison with Anglian Water to identify the preferred technical, environmental and cost effective option for providing surface water and foul water infrastructure for each site, including liaison with the Environment Agency where necessary;
  • Preparation of budget costs for the construction of the drainage infrastructure;
  • Production of a 'Constraints' Plan indicating highways, drainage and services infrastructure and off-site highway works;
  • Provision of an overview of site history and anticipated geo-environmental issues

This first stage culminated in a presentation to the Persimmon Regional Board.
