BWB Consulting play key role in prominent city centre Trinity Square redevelopment project. With demolition and site clearance substantially complete, and building work due to commence in August, the project will help to consolidate Nottingham´s position as a ´UK top five´ retail destination.
The Nottingham based integrated engineering and environmental consultancy is undertaking all civil and structural engineering detailed design work on the £100 million urban regeneration project, located close to the city´s historical core. The proposed scheme at Trinity Square by developers Helical Retail and Overton Developments, will comprise retail, leisure and residential facilities in the form of two separate, but carefully co-ordinated blocks of buildings. The northern block will accommodate a new 462 space multi-storey car park above the retail units to replace the public car parking that would otherwise be lost when the existing Trinity Square car park site is redeveloped.
BWB director Steve Wooler, said: ”Nottingham city centre has undergone tremendous redevelopment in the past five years as it positions itself to become the region´s largest and most influential city. Trinity Square will be one of the city´s most significant construction projects in recent times and will create a true landmark for Nottingham. We look forward to changing the face of the city centre with this exciting scheme.“
”BWB prides itself on being at the forefront of local projects and our specialist teams have been instrumental in this scheme since the commencement of the planning and development process. As a local firm we have intimate knowledge of the area and have been able to use this to our Clients´ advantage, particularly in relation to the road system changes needed to facilitate the development. To provide a pedestrian friendly environment around the buildings significant changes were needed to the City Council´s approved plans to alter the adjacent highway network.“
BWB persuaded the City Council to implement the alternative road scheme, which enables the construction of a high quality development and largely traffic free environment on the critical frontages of the two new blocks of buildings.
BWB´s specialist team has provided consultancy support throughout the planning process, including preparation of the transport assessment essential to the planning application. This proved the case for the alterations to the City Council´s government funded and approved Turning Point highway scheme for which BWB were subsequently appointed to undertake the detailed design work.
The project comprises 165,000 sq ft of quality retail space at street, basement and first floor levels, with three restaurants facing onto the new public open space within Trinity Square. Above the retail and leisure units there will be the new public car park in the northern block, with a total of 700 student apartments occupying the upper floors of both blocks. The total internal floor area of the mixed use development is approximately 610,000 sq ft accommodated between the basements and the top floors of the ten storey development.
Key design challenges have included safe demolition of existing structures, design for basements adjacent to live city centre streets, multi-storey car parking above the retail units and the transfer of off-grid loads from the residential development above the car park through the underlying structure. The project will also include enabling works, services infrastructure, hard and soft landscaping, and diversion of existing public sewers.
Nottingham is one of the UK´s fastest growing cities, one of the UK´s eight Government designated core cities and main economy drivers outside of London.
