Liquorice Park at Trafford Park

Location: Manchester

Since the beginning of the last century this 33 acre site was the location for a foundry and forge together with engineering facilities used in the production of wheel sets for the rail industry.

BWB were employed by the then land owner Adtranz (now Bombardier) to project manage the retrenchment of the remaining production capability into a 8 acre site within an existing building in order to release the remaining 25 acres for development.

Re-Trenchment:- BWB acting as Project Managers and Structural Designers to led the professional team including Red 4 Architects and Hoare Lee M and E services to obtain planning in order to re-size, re-clad and refurbish the existing 300,000 sq ft building to 120,000 sq ft and provide it with new incoming services, drainage and yard areas.

BWB then tendered and implemented a contract with Taylor-Woodrow construction to undertake the works through a £5.0m contract which was completed whilst maintaining production of the wheel sets.

Land-Remediation:-BWB undertook a series of intrusive investigations and detailed quantitive risk assessments to prepare a remediation strategy which they agreed with the Environmental Agency and Trafford MBC Environmental Health.

BWB then Project Managed a £2.8m remediation contract undertaken by C.A Blackwell. This involved the treatment of 30,000m3 of hydro carbon impacted soils and the re-engineering of a further 150,000m³ of soils including buried obstructions and slag waste to prepare the land for re-development.

Re-Development:- BWB then provided engineering services to facilitate the £10.5m construction by Marshall Construction Ltd of new estate roads, spine drainage and 350,000 sq ft industrial units on behalf of Commercial Developments Projects.
