Joseph Wright Six Form College

Location: Derby

A quality mixed use development of offices, retail and apartments contributing towards the renaissance within the city of derby inspired by Cityscape.

The Joseph Wright sixth form centre will be Derby College’s flagship site. Developed by Cedar House investments the state of the art facility will house 1500 students and provide the very latest equipment in a high-tech learning environment. It will be ready for students in September 2005.

BWB originally supported Cedar House to secure the site and provide advice on the infrastructure and building structure. This lead to the appointment of BWB as structural designers to design and build contractor Bowmer and Kirkland in a £11.5 million pound contract.

A key element of the design was to integrate the need for clear open spaces to the classrooms within the multi-storey building whilst maintaining a route for services through the structural fabric.

In addition the design also accommodated under-croft car parking and a full height glazed central atrium together with several different cladding materials.
