Little Hemsworth in Wakefield

Location: Yorkshire

BWB were appointed by Limes Developments to provide engineering services for the planning and design of a new Tesco store and a new school at Little Hemsworth, near Wakefield.

The proposed development site is bisected by the Hemsworth Brook, a local watercourse with a small but very steeply sloping and heavily urbanised catchment. The Hemsworth Brook had previously caused flooding of several properties alongside the site and flood risk was a contentious issue in the project, which was called in by Government Office.

BWB undertook hydrological calculations and prepared a river model to assess the existing flooding and identify the nature of the risk to the proposed development. Analysis of overland flow paths was also undertaken to identify the likely impact of culvert blockage.

This model was then used to design flood defences to protect existing properties and a wetland area to store floodwater and prevent any downstream impacts. The wetland was also designed to promote ecological improvements and provide a local interest feature for the new school.

The support of the Local Drainage Authority and the Environment Agency for the scheme was achieved through a process of negotiation. Expert Witness evidence prepared by BWB, and presented to the Planning Inspector, was a key factor in securing planning approval.
