Hampton Redevelopment

Location: Peterborough

The Hampton development is situated south-west of Peterborough city centre on the site of the former Orton Vale Brickworks. Almost all of the 1,000 hectare (2,500 acre) site for Hampton was left derelict for decades following excavation of clay for brick manufacture. The land once housed as many as 19 brick works. Between 1963 and 1991 large areas of abandoned clay workings were successfully restored to arable farming land using, in some areas, pulverized fuel ash to fill voids formed by the clay extraction. Land reclamation works were completed in 1996. Since then, the site has progressively been developed and will ultimately provide over 7,500 houses, providing homes for 18,000 people, built in four neighbourhoods - the largest development of its kind in Europe. The first neighbourhood of 1,300 homes, Hampton Hargate, is now well established and development of the second neighbourhood, Hampton Vale, which commenced in June 2001, will provide a further 1,700 homes.

The development will also comprise 400 acres of commercial development, including Cygnet Park, which provides up to 92,900 sq.m (1,000,000 sq.ft) of flexible business accommodation within a highly landscaped environment.

Serpentine Green Shopping Centre (280,000 sq.ft) provides an anchor to Hampton's retail facilities. Opened in 1999, it houses the second largest Tesco Extra Store in the country plus 17 other retail units in its shopping mall.

The development will also comprise four Neighbourhood Centres and its own primary and secondary schools. The first two primary schools opened in September 2000 and 2004 respectively. Almost a third of the development is to be left as open space, including a 400 acre country park, and 250 acres of nature reserve.

BWB have been involved as civil engineering design consultants from preliminary/strategic design stage through to construction stage for the infrastructure required for 4.5km of local distributor and collector roads on Hampton Hargate, Hampton Vale and Cygnet Park. We have also undertaken computer ground modelling to determine earthworks cut/fill requirements and to optimise plot plateau levels.
