This £35m development will provide state of the art facilities for one-stop diagnosis and treatment, including an ambulatory surgical unit, six theatres, extensive imaging facilities and an oncology clinic.
The project is a PFI scheme with preferred partner Jarvis .and consists of a new 4 storey building located in the grounds of the existing City Hospital site. The building will be the first of its kind aiming to reduce waiting list times by offering minor operations enabling patients to be discharged within a short period of time after the operation.
A primary objective of this project was to design a robust building with a minimum design life of thirty years with in built flexibility to allow the hospital Trust to change the internal layout during the life cycle of the unit.
Very tight tolerances were imposed by the Hospital Trust in respect of vibration and deflection within the imaging suites and operating theatres, leading to the choice of a reinforced concrete frame. Very poor ground conditions at the site lead to a piled substructure solution being adopted and further operational constraints narrowed the choice to a bored pile.
As the new unit was being built within the existing hospital grounds, major temporary works were required to relocate the main visitor car parks and to rationalise the hospital´s vast infrastructure. It was also essential to minimise operational disruption to the existing hospital facilities, including operating theatres and imaging suites, to minimise noise and eliminate as far as possible vibration from the construction process. BWB worked closely with the Hospital Trust and Jarvis to achieve these rigorous requirements.
