BWB were appointed by Wilson Bowden Developments to provide civil and structural engineering services for a new visitor centre in Moira, Leicestershire.
The development consisted of a major visitor centre comprising exhibition halls and restaurant facility with substantial external works including car parking and surface water balancing lakes.
The site was within a reclaimed mining area which was remediated and backfilled prior to construction works commencing. The visitor centre was positioned to ensure that it was founded on natural ground. Due to the presence of land gas, a passive gas protection system was incorporated within the foundation construction.
The super-structure consisted of an 80m diameter laminated timber frame with a structural steelwork inner core supporting the plant room.
The external elevations were clad with various high quality materials to reflect the needs of the client.
