Centenary Plaza

Location: Birmingham

This building will form the first phase of the Arena Central project in Birmingham´s regeneration, and will act as the lead project for the rest of this £400 million mixed use development on a key strategic site.

Block E will provide over 350 apartments in three blocks of up to twenty storeys, together with retail and leisure facilities at ground level lonking to the city street-scape. Four levels of above ground parking are also included within the development.

Key engineering achievements included:

  • The elimination of thermal movement joints from the post-tensioned reinforced concrete frame, in order to maximize the efficiency of the stair/lift cores which provide the lateral stability to the structure;
  • Design of stair and lift cores to be stable in their temporary condition up to twenty storeys high;
  • Ensuring the stability of the structure during all stages of the construction process to enable the sequencing of handover for occupation of seven discrete phases;
  • Major substructure works required to accommodate highly concentrated vertical loads from the cores and colums of the taller elements of the development.
